Jamestown's Big Bang
[05.07 item]
by Jody Argo Schroath
At the time in 2007 has its own place in the past, there will be maybe two or three people in the Chesapeake area, who have been touched by a case of Jamestown 400th anniversary, "she be wearing diapers. And not even then. . . .
There are many special events marking the fourth anniversary of the landing at Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in America, which spread back on last year. The replica ship Godspeed, for example, he toured the east coast before returning to Virginia to prepare for the first of passing year again landing on 26 April. Jamestown Live! allowed one million students across the country to watch a one hour webcast on the legacy of Jamestown, which asked students to a panel that included Chickahominy Chief Stephen Adkins, chief Jamestown archaeologist William Kelso, and former astronaut Dr. Kathryn Thornton. The tribes of Virginia, held a conference last October in 400 years of survival. And last month, radio host Tavis Smiley hosted a State 2007 the Black Union event in Footprint Black in America. Smiley asked a group of 36 notable African Americans to discuss the role blacks have played in the development of America from the arrival of the first slaves at Jamestown in 1619 to the present.
But do not worry, there are plenty of special activities still in the event horizon of 2007, including the largest rough and all of them. Weekend That would be U.S. anniversary, May 11 to 13 Jamestown, a mega-party will feature three days of special events and all sorts of famous people Jones, James Earl, Ricky Skaggs, Chaka Khan, Sandra Day O'Connor and, of course, the Richmond Orchestra Indian pumpkin (they grow their own instruments.) To help make sense of all the clutter-400 Jamestown including a visit May 3 and 4 by Queen Elizabeth II, we ruthlessly calculated these activities into several neat-Jamestown events, events all around the Bay and (the favorite of our readers) events with ships. Finally, you'll find two stories related to the first, how our understanding of what happened at Jamestown has changed over the years, have changed, the second information, the cruise Jamestown area.
Jamestown Events
When we speak of Jamestown, of course, we are talking Jamestown no one, but two. Jamestown For starters, this is how we went from zero to two: From Jamestown had disappeared as a town in the mid 18, 1907 celebration the 300th birthday, was held in Norfolk instead. But the 1957 event organizers moved the 350th birthday party back to Jamestown, a center built for purpose, called Jamestown Festival Park, located next to the original site. Jamestown Festival Park is now called Jamestown Settlement, whereas the landing site of 1607, strong principles and the city is called Historic Jamestown. Therefore, two Jamestowns and three sites for the 400 th anniversary weekend (the third is the anniversary of the Park, through Route 31 from the solution, and where many of the concerts of the weekend will take place).
Jamestown Settlement, under the operation of the Foundation Jamestown-Yorktown of Virginia, includes a re-creation of the Indian people, a strong replica Jamestown, 70,000 square feet of exhibition space Indoor and outdoor pools where you can walk along a 17-century English street, and reproductions of the ships that brought the first settlers: Susan Constant andDiscovery, good luck. The 400th anniversary special programming in the April 27 agreement begins with the opening of "The World of 1607", an ambitious cycle of exhibitions developed by 28 scholars with material taken from around the world to bring the Jamestown colony in a global context. The idea is to make us recognize that events nonscholars not in a vacuum, but rather as part of large forces, including political, social and artistic. The elements that form part of the exhibition include a 15-century copy of Magna Carta, a 1607 jade wine cup of Emperor Jahangir of India and 17 African-century carved ivory-shaker. Do not you feel smarter ya?
Much of the special program in Jamestown Agreement shall take place only during the anniversary weekend. This will include artillery demonstrations, honor guards, storytelling, performances and plays. There will be demonstrations by craftsmen and artisans, and more than enough to keep thousands of children as happy as clams for hours at a time. The replica of the ships will also be open for visits, and act as interpreters, guides dressed in all areas the park.
The archaeological site known Historic Jamestown, is a partnership between the National Park Service and the Association for Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (APVA). It is in the nearby island of Jamestown, connected to the mainland by the Colonial Parkway and a small bridge across Sandy Bay. In 1994, the APVA Archaeologist William Kelso hired to excavate the site in hopes of finding something exciting for the 2007 anniversary. Although previous excavations had found no evidence of the original James Fort, Kelso found him in his first excavation, in April. The site of the fort was long believed to have flooded two centuries ago by the James River. In fact, almost all traces of the original fort is on land, with only a corner under the water. In the year following the discovery, Kelso and his colleagues have discovered more than 700,000 objects, including a particularly intriguing skeleton found outside the original walls buried with the staff of a master of ceremonies. Kelso believes this may be the remains of Bartholomew Gosnold, captain of theGodspeed and one of the main leaders of the colony. [See box, page 57.]
Historic Jamestown has recently added an elegant, multi-window Archaearium, which uses intelligent visualization techniques to display a selection of artifacts sight of where they were unearthed. Also at Historic Jamestown, visitors can visit the house glassblowers, the remains of a church in the late 17, archaeological finds, as the contours of state legislature last Jamestown (1663), an early burial ground, and the statues of John Smith and Pocahontas.
Weekend Special on the anniversary of the historic events of the past Jamestown commemorations include the celebration of Jamestown, a series of programs called 104 men and boys, conferences and official farewell replica of the boat that will spend the rest of the summer of 1608 Captain John Smith recreating the voyages of discovery in Chesapeake Bay [See "Road Captain", October, November, 2006]. Smith was out of Jamestown, not long after the settlers arrived to explore the bay in search of gold and the long-sought Northwest Passage to Asia and contact with Native American tribes living along its shores. During two trips important discovery, Smith and his crew sailed or rowed to almost all the tributaries of the bay and Smith himself made his first detailed map. The leisure travel Jamestown leaving May 12 largely re Smith Travel, which makes about two dozen stops in towns and villages along the road.
music events play an important role in the timing of the anniversary weekend, including a 1,607 member choir and orchestra of 400 pieces, famous artists like Bruce Hornsby, Chaka Khan and Ricky Skaggs, and award-winning musical groups from dozens of schools and independent organizations around the country (including all-band mate). In addition, there recreations, plays, fireworks, parades, demonstrations and dramatic readings. . . in short, almost everything you can imagine. No more than 30,000 people will admitted in any of the three days, so buy a ticket in advance is essential. For a detailed list of events, visitwww.jamestown2007.org. You'll find in the entry information there, too, and in the sidebar of this page.
All over the Bay Events
While the anniversary weekend will produce the best results from the history books, you can be sure there will be a boomlet 400 Jamestown near you. It may be a signature event, the term used by Jamestown 2007 organizers of a dozen such important events in the region, many of those who make the official theme of the anniversary: A convergence of three cultures. Among them are the American Indian Intertribal Festival in Hampton, Virginia, on July 21 and 22 and the Afro-American and Business Expo on August 24 and 25 in Hampton Roads. Also on the calendar is the Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the National Mall in Washington, DC, June 27 to July 8, will feature artists, storytellers and crafts Virginia native, Southeast England and West Africa. Sept 16 to 19 will see the conclusion of the Forum on the Future of Democracy in Williamsburg. (For more information on these events in thewww.jamestown2007.org site.)
Elsewhere, a special exhibition at Richmond is especially worthy of note. "Rule Britannia! Art, Royalty and Power in the Age of Jamestown, "at the Museum of Fine Arts in Virginia, runs from 28 April to 12 August (www.vmfa.state.va.us / rule.html). This is an exhibition of 17th century royal portraits and maritime paintings, some of them massive, including special loans from the collection of Queen Elizabeth II museums including the National Gallery of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art and private collections in Britain. Some of these works have rarely been seen by the public.
In Norfolk, Virginia Living Museum will offer two special programs and very different, as a contribution to the Jamestown festivities. "Survivor: Jamestown Labyrinth" which runs through November 25 for children and adults challenges to wind their way through a maze, making decisions on the way to survive in this new world. Also in the Living Museum, backyard gardeners will delight in a new permanent garden that the Virginia botanical history of note is from 1607 to the present.
Two other events are worth mentioning Norfolk. Virginia Vela, June 7 to 12, with military parades and ceremonies, historical recreations, sea and activities cultural vessels hilltop overlooking the sea and the Norfolk Naval Base and Harborfest weekend, with theater and special exhibitions. (Www.sailvirginia2007.com) Norfolk also be the place of work in front of Navigation-A National Symposium on Water Access, May 9 to 11 at the Sheraton Norfolk Marriott. (Www.wateraccess2007.com).
The Kimball Theatre in Williamsburg (www.vptheatre.com) is showing a historical play, Smith, being the life and death of Captain John Hume Ivor Nel. This runs April 5 to December 31.
We could go on, but the list of events related to Jamestown in locations throughout the Chesapeake would be extended in the magazine next month so we recommend that checkwww.jamestown2007.org/calendar.cfm. You can search by date and area.
Ship events
Fortunately for us all sailors Bay, a large part of 400th anniversary events will take place in and around water. Again, it is enough information to sink a ship so just going to hit the high points. But we will give you some websites where you can find more information. Water events focusing on the fall more or less two categories: recreation events that have one or all of the three replica ships, Godspeed, Susan Constant and Discovery, and the enactment of new events centered in 1608 voyages of discovery of Captain John Smith and his team. To make things even more interesting, the Bay has produced not one, but asked for three replicates 30-foot boat Smith, a boat, carried on board ship from England and join in the New World. Each replica boats has its own itinerary, although occasionally, as in this first event, all will be together.
On the way back to Jamestown-laws, this is the Big Bang. On Thursday, April 26 the three ships and the three boats will be landing first State Park to Virginia Beach again a dramatic Jamestown colonists landed in America first at Cape Henry. The first landing program will start at 9 am You can not go so early? Do not worry, the first second landing program will begin at 3 pm There will be a right of entry into the park for the event.
The replica of the ships will leave the Virginia Beach April 28, because good luck is ahead in the event called Signature trip to the James. Good luck will stop at three ports before arriving at Jamestown on May 11 for the start of the anniversary weekend. [For all ports leg of the good fortune of James, and his trip in the bay this summer and fall, see sidebar, page 57.] sailors recreation are invited to join the flotilla of Virginia Beach in Hampton on April 28 in what Hampton calls the Great American Dock Party. The date also coincides with the Festival City for Children. (For information on participating marinas, call 800-487-8778.)
Although the three boats will be in Virginia Beach on 26 April for the first event of landing the "official", the boat comprising a Chestertown Sultana Projects, will have its formal farewell at 10 am May 12, Historic Jamestown for the start of the reconstruction of Smith's voyages of discovery. (You will need a ticket for the anniversary weekend to see the farewell.) The first of 20 official stops on the trip of recreation will be in Onancock on May 19 and 20, coinciding with the city's joint celebration of Captain Smith and the 200th birthday the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). In all official stops, visitors are invited to meet with the crew and see the exhibits Travellers who go along with it [see sidebar, page 56].
Special events are planned to coincide with the official stops the boat in both recreation trip and good luck, as visits to ports along the bay after the anniversary weekend, so check the program in the bar side and then look for informa-tion about its port of origin or favorite cruising grounds.
Finally, this summer the Captain John Smith 400 open trip nation's first trail across the water-historical, Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Water Trail, which was approved by Congress in December 2006 and is under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service. At three points in the journey of the boat Sultana, NOAA will operate its first three "smart buoys" which gives you information about the historical and ecological importance of particular place and live readings of the weather and water quality conditions water. The first buoy is located 400 meters from the coast south of Jamestown and monument dedicated on the anniversary weekend. The second is a mile northwest Mirador de la Luz near the mouth of the Potomac River. The third will be activated when the boat approaches Baltimore and lay about a mile east-southeast of Seven feet Knoll light. Boaters (and everyone else) will be able to make these buoys 877-BUOYBAY calling toll-free number. You can access the buoys through www.buoybay.org Internet.
Well, that's it for us. Now it's up to you. Take a look, learn more about the early United States, then go on board and go see for yourself!
