The option of having an attachable flexible hose makes the process of removing excess water simple and easy. As the room on a sea kayak is limited, the design should be conducive to that environment, with grip handles designs that ensure easy storage. The buoyancy of a hand pump made of plastic is an obvious plus. Make certain that before departing on your water expedition that all equipment, including the pump, is well maintained and is performing to its optimum.
One of the key advantages of a hand held pump is that it can be passed around, or given to a companion who is having difficulties.
A bilge pump is really a very important device to have in boats.?? Whether what you have is a sail boat or a powerboat, you cannot take for granted having an extra bilge pump in handy.?? You see most boaters think that one bilge pump can do the trick of keeping the boat from being water logged.?? They only realize this when they have already experienced sinking.?? Now that we have established its importance, let’s talk about some tips in choosing a pump for your boat.
First of all, you have to determine the number of pumps and the capacity of the pumps to be used.?? This all depends on the length of your boat.?? Go see an expert on these things.?? Ask from a company that deals in pumps (see below).?? They usually have resident experts that could help you with this.
Next you have to determine the number of compartments that your hull has.?? Even if you already have an idea of the number and capacity of pumps needed, it would still depend on the number of compartments.?? For instance, you have already determined that you need two 2500 GPH pumps for your boat but the compartments are divided into three, then two pumps wouldn’t do because each compartment traps a certain amount of water.?? You would then have to add another pump because that type of hull wouldn’t allow water to flow freely from one compartment to another. ??
Observe the lowest point of the hull where the water accumulates as well as the behavior of the water when the boat is in motion.?? Powerboats usually cause water to flow from the midsection to the aft when it starts moving forward.?? Sailboats usually accumulate water in the center of the bilge so this is where the pump should be located.?? For powerboats, a pump should be placed in the mid section for the water that accumulates here at rest and another at the aft section for the water that accumulates there during motion.
For boats that have an outboard motor, the weight of the motor causes water to flow to the aft and usually there is very little space that keeping the water from flowing in.?? Thus, special attention should be accorded here.?? Another problem with such a boat is when the batteries run out there no other source of power.?? A charger or extra batteries should be on hand.
Speedboats usually have a bilge pump installed under the floorboards where water seeks the lowest part of the boat, which is standard. But I don’t think that is enough with the present slew of faster and more expensive boats.
