Opening in March?
This March marks the 76th anniversary of one of the most important turning points in American history. The March 4, 1933, new President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed to the world that "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself." The President's words helped to buoy public confidence in an economy that had been crashing for nearly four years, and the recovery started almost immediately. He was one of the most important € "and effectiveâ €" the opening speeches of all time.
Wait a minute, you say. FDR inaugural was in March? Are not presidents ever sworn into office in late January? Well, are nową € |, but only for what happened in 1932-33. The Constitution initially requires a period of five months between the election day in November and the inauguration day of March next, this may make sense again in 1787, when transportation and communication throughout the Americas were painfully slow. At the time of Roosevelt finally took office, the country was about to break, fortunately, the new president was able to attract the public, to stabilize the country, not the banks, and avoid total disaster.
Before the debacle of the long wait of 1932-33 was even more frustrated state legislatures ratified the Amendment 20 to the Constitution, presidential inaugurals future movement six weeks. Thus President Obamaâ € "a new president faces serious economic crisis €" took over, which seems to make centuries, back on January 20, not only yesterday. And thank God for that. If you think Obama is doing a good job so far or not is difficult to imagine what situation was that today if a power void, George W. Bush had been in office for another two months doing nothing.
