How to read a depth and fish finder?
When displaying a fish, how do you know which direction it is moving —— fish on the screen always moves from right to left. and the bottom boundary is always right to left. What is this telling me?
Fish reported by the depth and fish finder only show that something found an echo back to the transducer. It could be a bubble, seaweed / grass, or (hopefully) a fish. The unit will try to determine the size of the object, which is why different sized "fish" on the screen. You can not say what how the object moves. The reason for moving the lower boundary from right to left is just to leave a trail so you can see what you've gone. Depth finders age only revealed the depth at that time – there was no record of how deep it had passed over it. Later versions of paper used (as a seismograph) to show the outline. This was a pain because paper was expensive, got wet, and ran. New electronic probes mimic paper machines old. When looking at the outline, you can see trends – like you're going to be stranded if the slope of fund is maintained at current or recently passed by a school of fish. By keeping a record below where you been, it is not necessary to see the tube all the time. Hope this helps.
