Fighting fire with fire (extinguishers)
While smoke detectors can warn of a fire, you can use to combat the fire. That's why you need a good fire extinguisher. But not enough to have it. A little fire
extinguishers only work for certain fires and indiscriminate use could extend that control the fire.
To determine the extinguisher to use, you must first know what kind of fire that we are fighting. Class A fires are those involving combustible materials such as paper, wood, fabric and upholstery. These fires can be extinguished with water safety or a fire extinguisher with base ammonium phosphate chemical.
Class B fires are those involving flammable liquids such as cooking grease, gasoline, solvents, paints and oils fuels. To extinguish this fire should suffocate the oxygen supply cut off. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) fire extinguisher is good for this type of fire.
Class C fires are caused by electrical appliances such as TV, receiver, fuse boxes and wiring. A unit of baking soda also control of this fire.
Fire extinguishers are classified according to size of type of fire it can extinguish. The higher the number, the more powerful extinguisher. Therefore, an extinguisher with a 2-A rating means that the unit is twice as effective for Class A fires one with a score of 1-A. fire extinguishers type C, however, are not ranked by number.
Some companies sell multipurpose A: B: C extinguishers to handle the three types of fires. While it may sound like a good buy, Consumer Reports said they often contain ammonium phosphate and are much less effective on grease fires the B: C units using sodium bicarbonate.
For maximum efficiency, Consumer Reports suggests:
Install fire extinguishers near exits so you can fire fighting and still be able to escape. Can also be used to remove a fire blocking an exit.
Place fire extinguishers on a wall at the hearing and high enough to facilitate access for adults. Most extinguishers come with a stand that can be glued or screwed to the wall. Those hangers can accidentally drop the wall. A marine support is safer but takes longer to remove.
Check fire extinguishers monthly to make sure it works. Most fire extinguishers are equipped with a gauge that indicates whether paid or not. Others have a test button to determine if they are running.
Never test a fire extinguisher reuse. This can seriously deplete its load off for when you really need the unit.
