fire extinguisher recharging

fire extinguisher recharging
Need to get your fire extinguisher revised periodically?

We've had ours for several years. I was fonduing today, so I took one of our fire extinguishers to put where we were cooking. I realized that instead of saying "full", says recharge. Should I take the fire department for that? Also, if you sit around for several years without using them, could you say "complete" and then not work when you need it? Do you work long time to recharge or is it better to replace every few years? Thank you.

Fire protection angeld Hello! and fire extinguishers has been my line of work for nearly 20 years, so I feel I can give some information here. Your store average unit purchase (Wal * Mart, Home Depot, etc) is usually not going to be the best quality. However, generally maintain the pressure without too much trouble for 6 to 12 years. NFPA Standard 10 (which has been approved by all U.S. states) requires an annual inspection by a qualified service company. You mentioned fire departments, including in the event that in some few states, but most fire departments that I know do not have the facilities to test and fill fire extinguishers, and are not insured to do so. In my state, carry fire departments and units to places where I work and service their units. Anyway, look up "fire extinguishers in the yellow pages for a list of service centers. You can check your drive for you usually for free or for a minimal charge ($ 3). If the pressure and within 6 years from their date of manufacture, which are good to go. At age 6, the units of dry chemical stored pressure (the most common type) have to be emptied, internal inspection, the seals (O-rings) replaced, and the recharging unit. At 12 years from the date of manufacture, the unit must be emptied, the test pressure (hydro-testing), inspected internally, seals replaced, and the recharging unit. I recommend you stay away from inexpensive units at Home Depot and Wal * Mart, particularly if they have a head made of plastic or nylon. Languages of the unit are cheap and often are "stuck" on full! Moreover, there can be Rechargeable. Units of the metal head are much better and last decades if cared for properly. I recommend Amerex, Ansul, or units of Badger brand. First, the Ansul private warning labels metal heads for resale at discount chains. They are not bad. Stay away from Kidde if the head is plastic.
