There are tanks on top of each building in New York … What are they?
I recently visited New York City for the first time I realized that almost every building has a cistern on top of it. I asked some of the native New Yorkers who met near them, and nobody could tell me why they are there. My guess is that they serve one of three purposes …. my guesses are: 1. The storage of water for extinguishing system fire in the building. 2. That capture and retain water for use in watering gardens, washing clothes, or for other practical purposes. This seems logical as it would reduce water costs for the building owner. 3. Or, they are there to help with water pressure. The pressure could be low if the water has to be pumped into top …. but if the water is pumped to a tank first and then delivered to the bottom, when necessary, it seems that it would increase the water pressure. Can someone give me a definitive answer once and for all?
We call on the water tanks. The system water is pumped to the city through the construction in the tank, then water is used to maintain water pressure in the building.
