Why sonar display the size of a fish, but not the kind of fish?

Sonar detects fish, because they have different density than the surrounding water. Wherever the fish "body" will be read differently than water, so you can determine the relative size and shape, and if the fish are not completely overlapping, you get an idea of numbers. But that is all that may sound. Imagine trying to identify a fish from its shadow on a white wall – that's what the sound "see." You also have the problem of "seeing" as above, or at best a downward angle – not from the side which could give more than one track to form. And the density, even individual fish may vary, depending on how recently eaten or how much air is in it of the air bladder (a function of the depth at which fish swim.)
