What is the range of transmission of an IC-68 ICOM VHF portable radio at full power (5 watt)? how many miles?
This is a really difficult question to answer. I could cite a distance, as they tend to FRS and GMRS handheld computers these days, but relies heavily on its environment, the ground and the other person's computer. If you are talking about the mountain from peak to peak, I'd say you'd have no problem going 100 miles of them. If you on the floor in the flat and smooth, probably 10 miles. General forest and field, perhaps three miles. Inside buildings, much less. Help if you are working through a repeater, having a better antenna than the rubber duck that comes with or if the receiving station is using a base unit. I can say outside, a VHF radio like this at 5 watts will do better than a 5-watt UHF radio. UHF radios glow in the center and is built for indoor environments. Remember that if you are using this unit you have to be licensed unless it is in the frequencies of Murs.
