Kokanee salmon size depends on population density and abundance of food. They thrive in all cold depths of lakes, clear and reservoirs and spawning on the gravel and sand in the bottom of the tributaries or the lake. Kokanee salmon swimming in schools compact and feed on zooplankton. Males have bright red color on the back of dirty gray, red and sides, the head is bright olive green, and its tail is black. The females are very similar, but colors are not as bright. Kokanee salmon range from 10-18 inches long.
The U.S. Army has developed some basic tips for ice fishing insurance. Following these safety tips, you are ready to go Kokanee salmon ice fishing. First, you must be physically fit to withstand extreme temperatures and have the best chance to survive dangerous situations like falling through the ice. Secondly, you must use resistant clothing which protects from wind, freezing temperatures, and precipitation. But the clothes must not be so cumbersome as to create a hazard if they fall though the ice. To avoid this dangerous situation, use a flotation device, while ice fishing, something like an inflatable vest or jacket. Third, take a team to measure the depth of the layer ice and articles for rescue or self rescue, like an ice pick or chisel.
The Army also offers some advice on safety procedures:
– Never go on the ice alone and never go on the ice if there is any safety issue. Always let someone know where you are going and how long it intends to be there.
– Know what the temperature has been for several days before your trip and keep an eye on the temperature while ice fishing.
– Search open water areas and listen to avoid cracks or booms that may indicate unsafe ice thickness.
– If you go on the ice in a group, always stay at least 10 feet away so as not to put too much weight on a point of ice.
Kokanee salmon ice fishing is best done in the coldest part of winter when the great lakes freeze over. They will be easier to catch, near the center of the lake where you can reach the deepest parts of the lake. You probably have the best luck in Alaska and northwestern Canada, but many areas in the 48 area is also good for Kokanee salmon ice fishing. Lake Tahoe in Nevada is a very popular because it is a freshwater lake depth, where abundant Kokanee salmon because they have plenty of space for breeding. There are also some great in Washington, Oregon, Wyoming, Montana and Colorado.
Before going in Kokanee salmon ice fishing trip, be sure to check local regulations. There are many places the prohibition of the practice, for example Crater Lake and Guelph Lake. While you can make some Kokanee salmon ice fishing lakes in New York, which is tightly regulated in that State. Be sure to consult with state fish and wildlife departments to know if the Kokanee salmon ice fishing is not allowed.
