HELP! I want advice on fish finders and GPS units …?
I ask those who have experience in fish finders, hopefully one with GPS capabilities (to mark the HOT SPOTS!) I have a 97-21ft Maxum to install, do not want a bargain basement model for price is the factor isn't decisive. I would like one with the ease of use, color LCD, GPS navigation, speed, depth sounder, etc. .. I am gonna use this in freshwater lakes within the Northwest (Idaho, Washington, Montana) have any idea?
There are plenty of options you can go from bare bones at best (for the size of your boat, obviously). I found that the best of both worlds (easy operation, clear reading, GPS / Fishfinder / Hot Spots) I would go with Garmin. As for the 435 and 535, are super easy to operate (only a few buttons) you have all the maps, and you can buy the program to load your Garmin MapSource more information your Garmin if desired. Now if you want a bit more high quality, you should go with RayMarine. They are installed much the same as a Garmin, but at the same time are a bit more complicated. They work very well for themselves, and if you get Navionics cards, you will notice that you can not find a better picture anywhere. The detail is incredible, and loaded Navionics maps show the mapping, depth charts and hazards / buoys (The Garmin gives depth numbers, mapping, no no risk / buoys). Just remember, for a premium product you pay a higher price. I would not hesitate to install a Lowrance, but only if the client wanted a Lowrance! They also have the Navionics charts, but the machine / unit is not as close to the Garmin or RayMarine. The trick is to go to a marine store and find out which one you want and which one you like better. Make sure you choose a nice place to mount on the dashboard so that it does not preclude their guides or field of vision, and do not get one through the hull or "puck" style transducer, get the transom transducer mounting. Use 3M 5200 fast cure dry and wet caulking on all the screw holes to prevent entry of water, using galvanized screws or stainless steel, and good luck with your choice!
