Boat Maintenance
There are some very important points that I felt were worth sharing with respect to boat maintenance. Most of these are refer to the two years I have lived and cruise on my sailboat of 40 feet, but also apply to almost any kind of navigation you can.
- The maintenance of your boat is not the same as maintaining your car. I do not do any maintenance on my car – but much of it on my boat because I think that surfers should know how to keep his boat for a variety of reasons: a) If you get stranded in your car help is usually much easier to ensure that when you are on your boat. Even if you operate your boat in protected inland waters may in the bottom of a creek or otherwise out of sight potential aid. But if you drive in a remote area – or one out of the United States, you really need to know how to solve a problem on his boat himself and have the tools and supplies to fix it. I had problems with my diesel engine once in a small port in the Bahamas and after a day of work on it without success I decided down to earth and try to find a local mechanic to help me. None existed. They told me what I should do is to fly in one at about $ 1500 – only to watch it, redress would be extra. I spent two more days working on it and I finally worked. B) If you get stranded in the car You can not walk to get help – in the case of a ship. Have you ever tried to put out a big pot – not too easy. C) vessels tend not be as reliable as cars, and not used as often and therefore are more prone to failure. Belts, hoses, electrical connections, valves, etc, etc, will deteriorate over time and not being used. Every time I visit my ship I start the engine, turn on the water and run through various outlets, opening and closing Keys fund, run the air conditioner, operate the bilge pump – basically turn and run all mechanical devices on my boat. This has been especially important when my boat was on the coast several (or many) hours away and therefore could not use it often.
- Buy some good books on the maintenance the boat. If you have a boat with an engine that should have at least a general book about boat maintenance. My favorite book is always at hand "owns the boat and Mechanical and Electrical Manual" by Nigel Calder. If you have a larger boat that you really should consider getting some other more specific books, such as repair and maintenance manuals for your engine.
- Most important advice I can give is to always look closely while the boat is being repaired. Whenever the electrical or mechanical work is my boat that sure Always I am there to watch and learn. I ask many questions and even help while work is being done. Makes repair work faster (and therefore cheaper) and I find out how to fix it by myself next time if I need it. After the leaves mechanical write notes about what took diagrams that show the key areas that were repaired or accessed.
