Can I listen to the radio VHF maritime radio locally?
would be able to modify a normal radio or my VHF radio equipment to receive or have to buy a marine handheld, etc?
You would be much better than just buying a portable radio and would probably be more cheap too. I do not know if there is any, but World sailors, as they go bankrupt, had a couple of big units for sale for under $ 50. Check out www.boatersworld.com and see if they have any left.
