What is that black square on my PFD (life jacket)?
I recently bought this PFD (personal flotation device) from REI, and comes with all kinds of handbags and things. It has a black square on it, with slots on 4 sides, both the front and back. What is that? Here is a link, you can see the side of the zipper: http://www.rei.com/product/751058 I suspect that things could use it to lash out on me. A friend of mine insists used to hold a knife, I'm sure is not true. Anybody know if you have a specific purpose?
Yes, you can whip things in that place, including a knife (or more specifically, a sheath of a knife). If white water boat, the ropes are an essential piece of safety equipment used to pull people to shore, foot traps handling, towing vessels, or remove them from the rocks. Having a knife in hand is essential to cut the rope in case someone gets tangled in it. In the worst cases, can even be used to puncture or saw a boat that has been irretrievably smashed against a rock.
