if you start a boat out of the water, how long until the pump burns out?
Less than 20 seconds will damage the rubber impeller in the water pump of an outboard. The only thing that cools and lubricates the rubber and the contact with the housing is the water. Rubber heats up very quickly from friction and will rapidly melt, distort and wear, opening the clearances between the impeller and pump housing where it will no longer pump.
