Why give up hope and let away?

The other NFL player did the same an hour later, reports, Schuyler said the Coast Guard. "I'm just trying to understand what happened … I've never experienced this and I just wanted to know how a person can decide to give up hope and let the ocean sweep away even take off their life jackets to be only in water for 2-4 hours. I'm not trying to disrespect the missing, but trying to understand the psychological part of it.
