How to Set-up a Dial-up Connection on Windows 2000

To set up a manual dial-up connection on Windows 2000, complete the following simple steps. Before you start, you need a land line phone service, a user name and password from the Internet service you have, a local dial-up access number, and 4-6 foot (or less) telephone cord. You will need to plug one end of the telephone cord into a wall phone jack and the other end into the back of the computer. If you have an external dial-up modem, plug the cord into the modem and connect the modem to the computer.

1. First, click Start, then Settings, then Network and Dial-up Connections.

2. Double-click “Make New Connection. The Network Connection Wizard will appear and ask you a series of questions. Click Next.

3. Choose the first option, “Dial up to private network”, by clicking the circle to the left of it, moving a dot to that circle.

4. Click Next. This section, “Phone Number to Dial” is where you enter the access number. If your ISP did not give you a number, you need to either select one from their website’s database or call the Internet service provider. If they are available, write down several access numbers for your area to keep for your records. If you need to change the numbers or recreate your dialer later, you won’t need to call or look them up again. Also, call your phone company to check whether the access numbers will be within local calling distance, or you might end up with high long distance fees for every minute you used the Internet. Your ISP cannot verify this for you.

5. Type the number in the “Phone number” space and include the area code only if you normally include it make a local phone call from your home phone. You do not need to type the area code in the area code box, however, as this is only used if you are using dialing rules, and you aren’t. By default, use dialing rules should not be checked, so uncheck if it is. Click Next.

6. In this section you can specify what users can use the dial-up connection. When you first log on to the computer, you must log in as a guest or as the owner, or if you have set up multiple log in accounts for roommates or family members, these are all considered users. If the connection is only for you, you choose “Only for myself”. Otherwise, be sure to check “For all users”, or no one else will have access to this connection.

7. Click next. You will see a message saying the setup is complete. Type the name of the connection, such as your ISP’s name, or your name or location if you need to specify that information. Also check “Add a shortcut to my desktop” so you have easy access to the connection later.

8. Click finish. You will be directed back to the Network and Dial-up Connections window. You should see your new connection listed beside Make New Connection. You can now close all the windows. Your shortcut should appear on the desktop.

9. Double click the connection shortcut. Fill in your user name and password. Be sure that you type them in the same case in which they were created. Also, you may need to include “@<ISPname>.com/net, etc., after your user name. You will need to check remember password if you want to have it automatically saved.

10. Click “Dial”. Your modem should connect and verify your user name and password. If it does connect, a brief message will display saying you are now connected, and the window will disappear. You can then double-click your browser icon or open your mail client to view webpages or check your mail. If for some reason it does not connect, an error message will appear giving a number and reason for not connecting. Sometimes the message is fairly straightforward and you can sometimes figure out what the problem is. You should call your ISP or a local technician to you cannot fix the issue right away. Be sure to write down the error number and message before you call your ISP.
