Is there a difference between manual and automatic bilge pumps?
I have a Rule 800 bilge pump with 2 wires, I am not sure if it is manual or automatic. Is there a way to tell w/o having the boat in front of you?
There is no difference so far as the pumps are concerned. To make any electric bilge pump automatic, run a dedicated supply, (ie: that by-passes the main battery switch) with appropriate rated fuse, via a float-switch in the bilge to the pump.
As the water rises it opens the switch and starts the pump. As this lowers the level, then the switch closes again and turns the pump off … etc. etc.
Get the switch from the local boat store, or chandlery.

Edit: Thanks Ed. I always reckon that if you want a direct manually switchable option at the panel (which I certainly would) just have another pump or pumps wired through the panel. All independent of one another. There’s nothing wrong with having more than one, even in a dry boat. In bigger boats it’s even sometimes a case of ‘Bilge 1′, ‘Bilge 2′ … etc.
All on separate circuits.
(But that was not what the questioner was asking, so I hadn’t said).
