What could cause a 1994 Pontiac Grand Am to over heat after replacing the water pump and thermostat?
My husband just buy this car had a wiring problem few and they told us that he had no problem except for wiring issues. Fixed wiring and now it is overheating. So I replaced the water pump and thermostsat, and still want more heat. What could be the problem. Has been discarded heater core, no lock there, and has ruled out head gasket, because it has great power and is working well, He says its overheating almost as soon as you start the car ????? Any ideas are the radiator fans are working. He is thinking of the radiator may be blocked somewhere. Well, he has verified Leak and no signs of leakage, but it's going to have to try.
The radiator / fan Onset car … make sure the fan is running. Let the car warm (not hot) and turn off the water … then the hand and feel the radiator … that should be hot throughout the core (Fins). Feel the top, bottom and side to side. There is so hot that the top and bottom hose. If there is a difference between them, the radiator is clogged and gunked, which restricts the flow of refrigerant. If this is the same … check your belt tension of the water pump, then take a water hose and clean the core rad (fins) NOT IN THE CAR WASH high psi will bend the fins. Finally, once all this is checked … you might want to run the car for a while with the radiator cap OFF, then recheck the coolant level. The system may need to be burped (as we call it) If you made repairs (pump / thermostat) and refill the cooling too quickly could have caught a good sized air pocket in the system. Good luck!
