An alarm valve is a check valve with a method of getting pressure or a light flow auxiliary port. The alarm valve opens when the pressure on the side of the system is low enough to supply pressure to open it. then some water out of the alarm port to a pressure switch or gong water motor. A deluge valve is a valve normally closed, opened by a stimulus other than the pressure in the system side. Normally, the stimulus comes from a heat detector for electrically operated systems, or loss of pressure in a pilot line. The pilot is equipped with air or water pressure, and has fusible plugs for the detection or sprinklers mounted in the right places. If the pilot line loses pressure, the deluge valve opens automatically. Features include manual operation ever. Rarely are deluge systems that are manually operated only. The alarm setting can be identical for alarm and deluge valves. If you are charged with designing a system in accordance with NFPA 13, a fire department (Siamese) connection is required. The exceptions are: 1. Fire suppression forces (if any) have no facilities for water supply department connection firefighters. 2. The Waiver authority. Of course the owner would agree too.
